Game Night: Saturday 10-12-2002

| Don B. | Steve | Suzanne |
Game Night took to the road for a rare appearance at Casa del Steve and Suzanne
this week. Very small turnout...besides the normal residents of CdSS, Dr. Vodka
showed up mid-afternoon to act as apprentice brewer. Brewing beer provides a
great excuse to drink lots of beer, so the good doctor and I were well on the
way to being hammered before we even broke out the games.
First we played Lord of the Rings: the Confrontation. This is basically
Stratego, with 9 (get it?) Good characters and 9 Dark characters. Good
characters have advantages in movement while Dark characters can typically kick
the Good character's ass in battle. Don and I played twice with Dark winning
each time (once under Don's command and once under mine). The key to this game
is guessing (if you're Dark) or concealing (if you're Good) Frodo's location.
Once Dark knows where Frodo is it's pretty much curtains for Good.
LotR: the Confrontation: Don 1 victory, Steve 1 victory
Now on to the stupid fun. Don brought over Zombies! and Suzanne obliged us by making a seemingly endless supply of Zombies to drink. Zombies is Carcassonne (lay the tiles) meets Night of the Living Dead (put zombies on the tiles and fight your way through them). Mechanics are a bit klutzy with too much dice rolling for my tastes but the cards (oh yeah, you've also got cards in your hand, adding to the klutzy mechanics) are hilarious. The idea here is to just stay alive until the helipad tile comes up, at which point everyone rushes to it like it's 1975 Saigon. The high point of this game was Don's end-game tactic of trying to die in order to respawn (er, sorry, too much BF1942 lately) closer to the helipad. Hey, it worked for me! He headed straight into a building full of zombies and proceeded to defeat every one of them...for two turns in a row!

Game Night: Saturday 10-12-2002

We started with an advance purchase of the new Barbie movie for the kids, so I took the extra free time to make two new drinks. The first is not actually new, but I finally recorded the recipe for "Mango Smoothies". The second for a new recipe for "Zombie coolers". A post creation change will be to crush the ice in the blender, THEN add the ingredients. btw, Zombie coolers are strong. "wicked strong".
We started with "piggy game". There were only 3 of us and halfway through the first hand I realized that once a person drowns, all low cards = eat it fonzie. Oops, too late. I faired little better in subsequent hands...
Land Unter Winner Steve 3 - Suzanne 2 - Ray 0
Then, someone asked (yes asked) for Masquerade. Now I like this game of sending and receiving signals. It went MUCH better this time, with everyone but Don understanding the rules. Don simple placed his hands on his head a lot. Steve did great, despite his lack of appreciation for the game. I spent too much time distracting Ed.
Maskenball Venezie Winner Ed 12 - Steve 12 - Ray 11 - Don 5 - Suzanne 5 - Ashley 1 - John P. -3
Before rage, we pulled out Dalmuti! I got to be king at least once and this game had a fair amount of chair switching even from the top. Just so we can score it, I propose the following scoring in the future: not being a peon for a round, 2 points. Being 2nd chair for a round 5 points, being king for a round 10 points. At the end of the round, "good" peons (that please the court) would get a point (as apposed to naught).
We ended the night with Rage. It was 7 rounds in before Suzanne missed a target... Woe is us. Where is the link to Steve or Suzanne's top ten game list? huh?
Rage Winner Suzanne 91 - John P. 77 - Don 53 - Ray 46 - Ashley 41 - Steve 17 - Ed 10

Ed suggested Carolus Magnus, I game that I have had trouble grasping in the past. For some reason I understood the mechanics, but could not grasp strategy. I was sort of the chicken running from the fox. I wanted to get somewhere save, but ended up just being prey. This time, however, it started to click. I managed to concentrate on creating a block of power, and was smart enough to know when I had to concede a country to another player (although it tore me up inside to see those little countrymen fall under foreign rule). In the end, John made a push and fell just short and I was patient enough to let Ed make a resulting move in panic. I do not panic, I could only make moves that would keep someone from winning the next move.
Carolus Magnus Winner Ray 8 - John P. 4 - Ed 0
After more people showed up, we needed a game that supported 7. Citadels is excellent and we swapped in the 6 & 8 cards ( I forget the names). I did not even have to assassinate every time! I was confident that had the game gone one more turn, I would have won. Knowing that it would not, I needed to pull a green building that cost only 2. I had 2 cards in my hand and selected the magician. I exchanged my 2 cards for two fresh cards and pulled a green building, but it cost 3. Jen, laughing to victory, showed me she had a green 2 building in her hand. Had I only known...

Small game night at my house. I introduced Das Amulet to John and Don. Don was smart early in the game by going after me because I had a lot of resources, I would have went for John because he had some killer combo spells. I had two spells that gave 3 resources each, this ended up being the game winner for me. Don had some great spells but lacked the resources to back them up.
Das Amulett Winner Ed 8 - John 6 - Don 5 - Ashley 4
